Stealing Eyes

Postby Sanyanya » Sat Jun 11, 2005 8:52 am

One of the Old Carradale fishermen used to say: 'Watch the toonies; they'd steal the eyes oot yer heid, and come back for your blinkers!'

I must say, I never found them like that.

I'm sure the chentleman knows that no one could dispute S'then's pivotal role in the history of the Scottish Nation. Indeed there are upstarts in Mud Argyll who need to be reminded o' that truth when they start peddlin' their muschief (Dalriada Festival, anyone?). The thing is they are tryin' to re-write history for their own ends, same as yersel' 4th Gen (if I may use your familar name). When the denged infudels arrived frae Ayrshire wi' their ethnic cleansing that wus the end o' wan chapter and the start o' another which eventually led to today's rid-necked phenomenon. Or so I've been told! If Dougie were here he wud tell ye himsel!

Thankgoodness I'm 4th gen S'then'!

At least the Ayrshire infidels meant we got rid of "that" gaelic a loat sooner than the Northern parts of Kintyre   ( Davie, have you not got a "ducks for cover" smilie!)..I'm sure the coarser and flaaaatter accent of Campbeltown and points South is due to the influx. The more heilan' lilt from up the Lergie and and Carradale is surely due to the fact that the poorer land there was not wanted by that band of white settelers, the gaelic lasted a lot longer and the remnants of it are in the accents........and I must say the very different but similar accents of East and West Kintyre and Terbert are faaaaaaaantastic!

Serious point, does anyone agree with my accent theory? maybe it is a well known theory....

here 4th, if i may be so bold, why is that the man to bring christianity to the (w)hole of scotland didny linger doon there very long?
did he rightfully think it was a lost cause in that pert o the wurld?
efter all the man that did ahhll the miracles lived a good few years afore that.
so maybe we need to get a stronger force to cast out the heathens, maybe off the end of the old lifboat slip.

but as for the wicker man thing i hear the bakers are clean sold out o firelighters, but nickle n dime have just got in an artic load.
and, and i also heard a whisper that an ex largiesider who used to live in the wee dale was caught dumping his load of logs off at the top of alt crooch ready for the building, and without even asking duigie.
this wicker man thing could get out of hand, whether hugh, pugh barny, mcgrew etc. can do anything about it remains to be seen

Who's Freddy Mercury? The only mercury that I ever saw in Carradale was in my thermometer. Well hopefully the nurses will keep a closer eye on the Hurricane this time, and maybe cut him a little bit of slack. After all 'Bellow & Bradley both boldly lied....the crime was murder one, and guess who testified'?

Any resemblance to Snoddy's past and present are purely coincidental!

Looks like auld Jeck's been posted North for a spell. There'll be no modem connection available in the B&B in Berneraigh then. I thought the finest vessels in the tred would be equipped with satellite links to the W.W.W.

Right Bubbly, its safe to come back oot the coop again, Jecks away to the Minch for a week or two, and hopefully the Soothender is on his way back doon to the land of the Sooth moothers. Aye and imagine condemnin oor mither tongue up here, what a damn cheeck.

Well maybe me and the Heidless Horseman should have stayed well clear of Southend. We thought that the lights were on but nobody in. It turns out that there was someone in and now he's come chapping at the doors. It took him some time to reach us, but even those modern tractors are denged hard to steer when you drive them in the high gears.

Maybe he'll take Sanyanya away with him to help him thin his turnips. Morenish is bound to need a hand with the silage as well, and that would allow us to leave our sheds unlocked for the summer.

As for the firelighters, Morenish should know by now, that the cockabendies from Airds Wid and some old newspapers are all that's required.

Puck Fair

Postby The Scouder » Mon Jun 13, 2005 10:52 pm

Hey Gary! This is the Voice of the Scouder calling from overseas - hope you can hear me. Over and Out. The gales buffeted me all over the shop and I've ended up on the Emerald Isle, but while I was waiting for the tide to turn I was at the intelligence gathering and found the following tried and tested formula which you could use to bring hordes of towrists (not to mention Toonies and curious Jakes) up to Trumpton for a long weekend!

Puck Fair Aug 10-12, Killorglin, Co Kerry

A puck (billy goat) is placed on a stand in the middle of Killorglin while people drink to its health for three days. Any excuse. There is also a beauty pageant to find the Queen of Puck. Seriously.
Details: www.puckfair.ie.

Sounds like the perfect warm up for the MOK Music Festival!

How would the fair maidens of Middle East Kintyre take to being paraded up and down the quay in honour of one of the point goats whilst the male population (who had been on the sauce for three days - but wha wid notice a difference onyways?) had a good goat gloat at them before one of them was crowned Miss Trumpton?

The thought makes the lifeboat night pale into insignificance!

You've got to hand it to them Kerrymen - they sure know how to throw a party! Maybe its something that could be integrated into the summer Lifeboat Day down at the harbour? ;o)

Oh and there's at least one other 'Gentleman Farmer' lurking on here that I know about.

How was the Guinness, Scouder? It's been far too long since I was last across in Ireland. Was hoping to get across for the NW200 this year but it wasn't to be. Maybe next year.

Cheers
