Aye, it's Jeck again callin' frae overseas.
Ah managed tae gie thon nurses the slup this fine day and thocht I wid look in on ye all. Just for auld times sake, ye'll understand? Chust as well I did by the look o'things. There's deng all heppenin' here but earnest young men arguin' lek there's no tomorrow aboot subjects they know hee-haw aboot!
Music? Is that whit ye cry it?
Stop you now, boys. If ma shupmates had been spared we would huv shown ye music. Dougie on the trump, Jum on his wee melodeon an' the Captain holdin' the beat with his size twelve sea-boots thumpin' on the daick or on the floor while gien' Calum Beag ladly 'til his tonsils near fell oot. That was music.
Me, I wusna a player masel' but in ma day boys, I could dance the best o' them oot the door. Man, oor ceilidhs wus legend whether we woss tied up in Furnace, Sandbank or indeed Carradale itself. Ach, but the young folks today they know nothin' about music, nothin' at aall!
Still there wus wan fellow in these parts that hud a bit o' the auld style aboot him. I canna mind his name, but he played the box and bedammt but he was good boys. He wore a bunnet like a fermer's while he woss playing and in the course of the night it would move from the front to the side of his head. And boys oh dear, at the Strip the Wullow he woss chust sublime. Sometimes if I can mind, he would play wi' a drummer, but this man woss no ordinary drummer. As I recall this chentleman woss a wan man rythmn machine. Wi his long blonde hair and big perka jaicket he seemed kinda bulky, but you were never in doubt that underneath lurked a boady lek a finely tuned engine.
Music is it?
I'll gie ye music ye young unfidels. Ye widna know music if it jumped up and sang tae yez. All these dammt beat groups that they have nooadays. That's no' music. Durrty jazz, that's aall it is. Jeest durrty, durrty jazz....
Ochone, auld Jeck is aall washed oot and I'll need to get back tae ma bed afore they try thon nesty, nesty trick on me again wi' the Earl Grey tea....
Ah'll talk tae yez all again at the Terbert Fair if Ah'm spared that long.
