Carradale village hall was packed to the doors last night for an excellent nights entertainment by varies artists as you can see in the pics and in the programme. The slides/film of yesteryear by Lachie was out of this world, bringing a tear to the eye of some in the audience. The tatties and herring at the break, a small refreshment or two, a night that a lot of people i think will not forget. Some faces in the audience from Tarbert, Carradale, Campbeltown and Ayrshire.Lachies speach at the end thanking all the helpers and the contributors to nights show. Memories that will lingre in our minds for some time to come.

is that thon guitarist from bon jovi i'm seeing in some of the pics? on the far right?

i don't notice the pair i was on about earlier, but i do see a picture of a delegate, did you give him a nice fried danish pastry with his herring and tatties?

wish i'd mentioned it to the wife earlier, we'd have been up to see wot looked a very entertaining evening, tho if one of your guitar players had a few too many and started on about sticking a square slice in with your smoked haddies? well you can blame me, i gave him my recipe, tho i expect there were a few there had already tried it, quite a few times if that pic of lachie is anything to go by, he hasna missed many meals since i last saw him

just had another look at the pics, aye theres one there!!!!

Never the Likes

Postby Right Pongal » Sun Aug 26, 2007 11:57 pm

Boys oh dear, there was never the likes of that seen before in the village and proably never shall be again.

Angus Martin set the scene with a brief history of George Campbell Hay, highlighting his connections with Kintyre, Ayrshire and the fishing industry, before delivering two of his own poems.

A fishwife who sang like a linty, complete with a precocious herring under her arm opened the musical side of the evening with some evocative traditonal songs. Shelagh Cameron later sang a stirring song with Ayrshire origins with the Ayrshire ringer Stormdrift at the centre of the theme.

Then Glenelg's Eddie Stiven's rendition of 'Seeker Reaper' was absolutely breathtakingly delivered to a crescendo culminating in an uncharacteristic silence from the packed hall. For two seconds you could have heard the wings of the moths at the back of the stage curtains beating to the perameter of George Campbell Hay's classic, before sustained tumulteous applause from the adrenalin packed audience.

I was ready to head home to the Lea side of thon island, but they weren't finished with us yet. No, they had only started pulling the strings. They teed us up with a lighthearted study of 'Ivor Cutler's' 'Scotland Gets its Brains from the Herring', then swept us along in a wave of nostalgia, culminating in a rogues gallery that left lumps in throats and tears flowing down cheeks as Eddie extinguished the flambeau.

For the second time that night, there was a momentary silence as folk picked their hearts from the floor to applaud the efforts of Mr Paterson & crew.

A rendition of the 23rd psalm at this point would have been a welcome tonic, but the arrival of Alex 'Horsie' MacKinnon and the Sarachs was the next best thing to a colourful Samba band. Eddie Stiven joined the Sarachs for 'The Grey Funnel Line', 'Flory Loynachan' got an airing but the highlight of the night had to be when Archie Bob was teased from the crowd to deliver a rabble rousing rendition of 'Heave away the trawl my boys' with the whole audience joining in the chorus: 'And so did John the Shore!'

You had to be there to understand the mixture of emotions in what was probably a once in a lifetime experience. Apparently there were around 400 carefully selected images from Lachies coveted collection on display, with contributions from many people around the world. Some of the photos came from as far away as New Zealand to complete the jigsaw, with others arriving by email on the day of the show.

It was announced at the end of the evening's entertainment that the profits would be split between Carradale Drama Club and the Fishermans' Mission.

Pass the 12 year old Springbank, I can feel a downer coming on!

"are ye fond of the juice of an orange?"

"two fish suppers and another one please!!"

Thank goodness the after effects of this circus are beginning to wane.

Monday morning saw a procession of the elder generation piling into the Red Cross bus to consult yours truly with a wide range of physical and emotional problems.

Viagra has been the most heavily prescribed medication to the OAPs in this catchment area for as long back as I can now remember. Not last week: Omeprazole for indigestion and anti-depressants have knocked the old hair-raiser into third place.

Normally I would be encouraging the consumption of herring and other pelagic species due to the benefit of the Omega 3 fatty acids, but after exhaustive tests and research, I have discovered that butter was included in the frying medium. Neither did the potted herring go down well with those that are accustomed to swallowing 'Rennies' like sweeties.

DISTRESS:

Notwithstanding the gastronomic delights, I have had to arrange group counseling for the emotional cripples that not only saw their forefathers during the slideshow, but were also reminded of their own mortality and impending doom. The organizers had bouncers on the doors, not to prevent anyone getting in, but refusing exit to anyone who wasn't yet in tears.

Some of the audience had taken precautions and ensured that they had consumed enough at the bar to blot out the conscious memory and the hard of hearing were in a position to turn off their hearing aids when 'The Wild Sarachs' struck up the opening chords of their massacre of 'Carradale Glen'. Where were the local Police when all this was going on?

Hopefully this will never be repeated and the perpetrators brought to justice.

Two spoonfulls of Halibut-Liver Oil, Morning & Evening. You know the surgery hours, so don't bother me at any other time. I most certainly don't get paid enough.

Any resemblance to Snoddy's past and present are purely coincidental!

Yes, haven't seen so many lenses pointed at a Carradale match in ages.

Sounds like I missed an excellent spectacle. I heard that Miss Cameron was like a clipper in full sail, akin to 'Miranda the Tempest', luring the seamen perilously close to the Crubhan before stunning the audience with her powerful rendition of a traditional song that left the band eddying in the smooth undercurrent of her wake.

Any chance of a 'Woodstock' version of the show?

Full of Ke*ch

Postby Right Pongal » Sun Sep 30, 2007 2:21 pm

I was reading in the Antler that the K88ch collectors down the avenue are full to overflowing. Surely the silly b's that have noticed have made alternative arrangements. It would be like returning to a public toilet for a dump, knowing that the cistern wasn't working the last time and still wasn't likely to be either.

On a lighter note, I gather that the Tarbert choir resorted to fielding a team of alsorans after the droll Carradale contingent that make up the backbone of the highly acclaimed traditional songsters renaged on the trip to the Mull provincial Mod. Why?

The duck race of course!

Who would miss out on a feed of the best of Kintyre produce to sing in a draughty hall in Tobermory? Not me for sure.

The kilt can stay away until Fort William in October.

Can't say that I've ever found them to be over-flowing, and I should know. :)

The bag dispensers have been empty for a few weeks but that's because we've run out of bags and can't buy any more until we can get some funding from somewhere. Unfortunately the council's are the wrong size to fit them. Last year we bought 2400 thinking that 200 per month would be ample but clearly it wasn't. Maybe people are taking them home to use as freezer bags or something (!) Intending to buy four packs of 800 for the coming year.

I hope you agree that it's nice now being able to walk along there without having to constantly scan the path in front of you for doggy landmines.
