Scouders

Postby hill60 » Mon Mar 03, 2008 7:05 pm

Humphlock an pals

Online Scots Dictionary

Hae a look at the Dictionar o the Scots Leid at http://www.dsl.ac.uk/

It's got "scowder" meaning tae burn, scorch, etc., which might be where scouder meanin stingin jeelyfush came frae.

"Cockie-Bendie" is there with the rhyme, and "cock-a-bendy" frae a rope twustin machine, a paper boat, a bumptious mon, an a sma boy. Some ither meanins tae. Nae pine cones.

"Maukin" is in, meanin a hare.

The Macdougalls o' Tonadippen

Postby SARID » Tue Mar 04, 2008 7:07 pm

Mathew Macdougall is in the 1881 census livin at Tonadippen ( Ah presume that's Sooth Dippen) wi his wife an a squad o' weans. Ther's no mention o' his sons Alistair or Neil----- maybe they wirna born by then. The twins Aggie (Dunnis's Mither) an Kate ( Wal's Mither ) were the oldest and were 12 in 1881
There wir quite a few femilies livin there, and ye can still see the stoney ootline o' some o' the hooses. The Macd. hoose was where the Washington hoose is now.
Mathew built a stone shed on the shore below Whitestone. ( Mary his wife wis a MacKinlay, a daughter o' the fermer at Whitestone,) Mathew stored tatties, and when he left fur the fishin in Ireland, the boat wis fill tae the gunnels wi tatties tae sell in Ireland. He supposedly went as far Sooth as Kinsale, but Ah wonder if it really wis as far as that------ its some distance

"Seves" as Matha Rob wid say. Whare did ye get aw that infurmashon abit Tonadippen. Niver heard o' it in ma life an ah grew up wi a' these yarns. Ur ye havin seances in that wee hoose o' yours. Maybe you've logged on tae some hindsight computer that the rest o us are no aquaint wi. Ah hope the tatties were the best o stock an no Epicure bags o' water that Wal used to say his competitor sold.

ah cam on here thi night just tae list all the wans that were called efter their Grampa Mc dougal. Am awful good at the lists!

There wis Mattie Bayview who wis a kinda blacksheep. He wis sent off tae his antie in Montana and for the rest o his natural he prospected fur gold in Idaho. Ah don't think he had much luck.

Matthew Cook a jiner tae trade went off tae S Africa wi' aw the femily and they prospered there.

Matha Ruadh had the Acacia and wis also a jiner and passed on his skills tae Donna who wis buildin wheelhouses. That wid be an inherited gene from their Granpa.

Matha Duncs wis at the fishin as wis Matha Rob who lived in Dunvalanree.

Ah hope ah havna missed anybudy oot. Am all nervous since ah pit ma fit in it yistirday. Bubbly's niver said it's ok
