The estate sawmill wis there, aye, but there wis a forestry sawmill as well in the field across the rod during the war. Ah thought maybe it was it goin by the background, and is that no a wee bit o the rod in the bottom right corner? Tae me, the phota looks as if it wis taken from the grounds o the estate sawmill.

Ah canna mind o the statue o the wee boy, though.

as for the folk takin pot shots at big malky, if they missed a target that size they shouldny have a gun :D

aye theres that much trouble here even the bochans are lying low......................well he's quiet anyway...............................hhmmmmm he's either locked in his new caboodle or he's got somthin to dae wi all this trouble, has enybudy checked to see if gerry pit the door handle on in the inside?

Morenish, I have been looking at the Working Time Directive that Whups and Jingles mentioned in another thread and realised that you are working me far too hard.

Pedalling that generator for the inbuilt massager in the back of your Bostrum chair has taken years off my knee and ankle joints. At this rate, you are going to have to give me a shot of the chair as well. I Heard that Bochan Mor is looking for an assistant life raft packer with a better rate of pay and much better living conditions, with 'The Caboodle' being offered for the daylight hours only, as he will be burning the midnight oil himself in there.

OK, I'll put the harness back on, but I'm warning you, 'The Times they are a changing!'

your probably right enuff, for some reason i thought the background looked a bit nearer brackley but who am i to argue, it was probably taken during the war right enough when the grandfaither wiz aboot, and Mcrae fae the kilbrannan and thon bri nylon wearin yoddler were chasing the land girls. i might be wrang but i think my grandfaither worked both mills at one time or another, so that makes everything clearer, its either the estate mill or the forestry mill, its either where the network centre is(whereverthehell, that is?) or its behind it, or not, or up by the fitba pitch or not, can we agree the photo might have been taken somewhere between torrisdale and grogport at some time between the last flood and the big flit(the move to davaar of the granny and all she surveyed, she left the chickens behind) thats fair enough, next week i'll post a pic of john shaw and his wife marion and ask youz who it is!!!

The Ride

Postby SARID » Wed Mar 05, 2008 6:59 pm

I'm sure the sawmill photo wis taken o' the field across the rod from the Network Centre. I think ,Gen. Jack, you hae Carradale connections yir no lettin on aboot.
I mind when I wis at the School, wance in a while a few o' us wid take a notion tae come home "The Ride " ( this wis in the days before the Forestry took over the Wid, and the rhoddies wirna so rampant)The Ride wis a way through the wid above the sawmill and the Hall
We used tae cross a wild rickity bridge over a crevasse wi a burn running through it ( probably the burn that goes intae the old dam above the Hall ) If I saw the crevasse the day, it wid be a quarter o' the size I mind it tae be.
We came doon from the hill where the playing fields are now, and we would usually hav a plooter in the Ballemenoch Burn before goin home, probably tae a row for bein late. It took a while tae come home "the ride" !!
How did it get the name? Wis it tae do wi the Estate?

my connections are no secret to most in this section, but i'm naw even gonna attempt tae spell the name of the house as i'll get it terribly wrang and get a row fae bitter end or pongal, suffice to say the family seat is situated above the glen, or campbells shop if your auld enough to mind.

its fifty years since we left the village for the bright lights and settled among the "low townies" theres still an odd yin left in the village but from auld davie's first marraige, my fether being one of three from his second family he started at the age of 47, my old fla being the middle one of three sons the "rid" wans as opposed to the "black" wans, the john shaw i mentioned being the son of one of the "black" sons, makng him my cuzzin, another cuzzin willie still lives in the village.

it caused me no end of suspeechon, at the fishing, the villagers lookin on us as "townies" the townies lumpin us in with the lads fae "trumpton" and granted i was mair prone to pass an hour or two on the VHF with residents of waterfoot and that cheery wee manny with the dodgy hernia fae up the back of the golf course, now a cog in the calmac empire.

canna make it any plainer than that can i? the pic as you say must be across the road fae the centre, naw far fae the hoose up the brae, i know my grandfather worked the forestry and for naiomi, i even heard a rumour that he did mair than chop wud for her, tho he wid have been a gid age. never met him since he died at 70, 4 yrs before i was born, my mother never even met him i don't think, theres only one photo of him in exsistance, a bit big to scan, staunen leanin on a spade.

Ah doant lake any unpleasantness and so ah've been wonderin how tae gently gie ye a wee explanation GJ aboot talkin aboot the deid. To my total amazement when ah finally got geared up tae come on and explain I found you yersel talkin about the deid. Anywie here's ma reasonin.

Whin ah wis young the auld yins wir always witterin on aboot times past and it used tae get on ma nerves an ah widna pay any attenshun. Naow ah only mind aboot a quarter o the yarns and wish ah knew more. Ah kno my ones arna listnen either so ah feel if ah can get doon on this site whit ah remember these old stories might be there for posterity.

Ah mind yer faither when he played fitba fer Carridle. Can ah also mention that thanks tae Freddy Gillies ah now know that the Jasmine and the Escalonia are wan an the same CN110. When me an ma pals had a night at the fishin when we were wee that wis the boat we went on. Great condensed milk.

his fitba exploits, the uncle that is, naw the wan that wiz, has told me manys the story aboot him and a few others, best player ever tae come oot the village he sed, if you don't count the 80's team and the warcry of "gie the ba tae jonndy!!" haa ha ha. the peeweep has plenty tales aboot skeletons, the closet kind, nawthe deid kind. right sweetie wifie, i'lll need tae get him wae a tape to get them all down, see if i canna offend sumdies granny.

hope ye got that book for yir xmas, i've seen it and thats s'ah am sayin!!!

Another o' Mrs Donnie's songs tae sing at that perty up Airds Wid. It's a wee bit cheerier than the ither Carradale wan.

Carradale, Carradale, there's music in that name
A melody reminding me of youth and love and hame
I'm ever longing for the day I'll take the homeward trail
Once more to gaze from Dippen's braes
On lovely Carradale. (chorus)

I've often trod the winding path that skirts Kilbrannan shores
And waded through the heather bells that blossom on Tormore
From Castle Rock at eventide I've watched the boats set sail
I've wished them luck and safely back at morn
to Carradale.

Chorus

In fancy oft my spirit takes the road up from the sea
From Moineruadh and Drumbuie and on to Kirnashee
And whether it be summer suns or winter's driving gales
There's beauty there beyond compare
in lovely Carradale

Chorus

When I am sad and weary and my heart is full of pain
I try to picture childhood scenes and live them o'er again
LALA LALA LALA LALA LALA LALA LALA
Once more to see revealed to me
My native Carradale. Anyone Know LALAs? Janette singing this is "chust sublime"

Song------ Carradale

Postby SARID » Thu Mar 06, 2008 8:05 pm

Well done Cuach! Ad clean forgotten aboot that ither "Carradale " song. Far cheerier than "Carradale Glen"There will be less folk greetin at the end o' our evening up Airds Wid!
Also this song will gie General Jack the correct spelling o'"Moineruadh" so no excuses. That's the place the wifie saw the boat sailing ower the field, when the local boat wis loast on the way home frae Ireland. That's the story according tae Chuckiebay.
The names o' two o' Mathew Macdougall's boats are inscribed above the coonter in the restaurant in the Oyster Bar at the heid o' Loch Fyne. They are, if ah mind right " The Clan Macdougall" and the " Maggie Macdougall" Ah'll need tae check the nixt time am on ma way tae Glesca, tae be sure am right. There's other boats minded as well, an ah wis told when ah asked aboot how they wir there, wis told they wir the boats that regularly fished Loch Fyne long ago

The La Las

Postby chuckiebay » Thu Mar 06, 2008 8:47 pm

GJ you an I hae a job keepin eachother right for ah'm wi cuach for the LALAs. They're jeest sublime.

The mention o' these places brings me tae another thing that's botherin me. When on earth did Kirnashee turn intae Grianan( wae fancy spellin) That's whit's written on the sign at whit ah know as Kirnashee. Grianan is over at the coast and ah wance had an awful intrestin walk wi a relation o mine and his wife doon along that forestry rod past the ruins o' the hamlet o' Grianan an he explained whit it wis a' aboot. He kent a lot aboot the development o' Carridle an ah fair wish he wid cum on here an' tell us a' aboot it.

Drumbuie must be aboot where the auld forestry nursery wis.

Folk talk now aboot Deer Hill. My faither called the hill tae the left o' Tormore as ye look at it from the pier Croc Dhone. Ah don't expect that's the richt spellin but it must be on fairly recent maps. Deer Hill just disnae fit in as far as ah'm concerned.

Whit an auld grump ah am
