Wuffler

Postby Sanyanya » Thu Apr 24, 2008 5:58 pm

Is that not 'Pop Baker's' Wuffler? I am sure my mother used to spend the day sitting on it when he was wuffling the hay!

Not sure if this is the right place to post this. It's a picture of a postcard that is for sale on ebay. Doesn't say how old it is.

Cuach mentioned rid squirrels the ither day, and Ah haav tae say its a while since Ah last spotted wan. There wis an article in the Paper a couple o' days ago that "squirrel pox" his been found on an estate in Galloway. This disease is deadly tae rid squirrels, and harmless tae greys, and this morning I read that the area north o' Blair Atholl and Strathdon is grey squirrel free , and regarded as a santuary fur the rid variety.
Wild panic when a grey wis very recently spotted on the ootskirts o' Inverness so the cry his gone out tae catch the fugitive.SNH think the grey got a lift on a hay lorry comin up from the central belt.
Any sight or sound o' that denged cuckoo? Surely wi somewhere lake Carradil tae spend the Summer she winna waste time hingin about Drumlemen
Am havin a bit o' a job mindin how tae spell some follks names------ so apologies if a got some wrong.

Och aye, Sarid Ah remember gatherin' and eatin' sooracks. None o' the no liking salads when we were wee. When ah get these mixed salad packs from Tesco ah often wonder if there are sooracks among them. They'll have a fancy name now. Ah remember going down to the wee burn that runs oot o' the well on Portrigh road to get water cress to put on a Baker's roll with butter. It was lovely. The water cress is still there , so are the rolls but ah wouldna risk eatin' the cress now.

The boat carries the registration CN51. Anyone know its name or who owned it?

Carradale Painting

Postby SARID » Tue Apr 29, 2008 2:32 pm

The Anthony Woodd Gallery in Edinburgh (anthonywoodd.com) has a painting entitled "Carradale Kintyre " for sale in the Gallery. It is actually a painting of a fishing boat in the Burn, and you can see the Point in the background. I wonder if the boat was one built by Mathew Macdougall ?
The painting is oil on canvas, and measures 36 by 54
The artist was Robert Weir Allan , born in Glasgow , and lived 1842------ 1949
If you have a spare £ 14.500, the picture can be yours !!

Photo of the Bakers

Postby chuckiebay » Wed Apr 30, 2008 11:05 pm

Ah'm wunderin who's in the line up. Is the man on the left THEJohn Paterson founder o' the bakers or is it his faither who stairted the shop. He had it furst in the front room in Airds Cottage an he wis that mean he wid crack the boilings wi' ees teeth tae get the weight exact. Ah don't think later generations were as bad but ah shoodna be givin' them ideas.

The first lassie in from the left ah wis thinkin might be a young Maggie from Dunolly at Portrigh who wis a daughter and worked in the shop.

Re Waiting for the Steamer

Postby SARID » Fri May 02, 2008 2:54 pm

Now then, Chuckiebay" A've bin studyin the old picture o'the folk on the quay at Carradil.
The fella on the left foreground,I wid say is a Paterson, and could well be Walter Paterson, Bayview ( Wal's Fether ) He bought herring on behalf o' a Glesca fishmerchant, an wis doon the quay tae meet the Steamer ivery day.( His ither job wis "Inspector O' Poor " and wan o' his responsibilities in relation tae that wis, when some poor cratur had tae go intae the Poorhoose (Witchburn ) or wis destitute ,he had tae get the Parish the Pauper wis born in, tae meet the expences incurred )
Anyway, tae get back tae the quay!Walter's wife knew tae pit the potatoes on as the Steamer passed Pirnmill, and then she wis sure the dinner wid be ready by the time he waaked up the quay brae.
The wee bay at the fit o' the Spoot Wid is called "Faillie's Port ", named efter the old fella who wis cracking the boilings wi his wallies. "Faillie" I'm told, is a corruption o' " Faither ", and wis pronounced that way by wan o, his weans.
