I cannot help but agree. As you know I live in Thanet where one of the largest operational offshore wind farms anywhere in the World is being constructed by Vattenfall:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanet_Wind_Farm

I am in favour of windfarms as I believe they make a significant contribution to the Government’s national and regional renewable energy targets BUT I walk along the coast several times a week and what was a beautiful view is now spoiled. Now, this view in no way can be compared to the view WC1 is describing above and so I would fight tooth and nail for it not to happen. Sorry but no-one travels to Margate to be awed by the view from the beach there. Can I just ask if an environmental impact assessment has been prepared to determine the effects on the local environment?

wake up and protest a nuclear site in carradale glens a better option for long term jobs. the trees will hide it and the locals already have webbed feet.

Hello. My name is Peter Ross. I'm a journalist with Scotland On Sunday. I'm writing a story about wind power in Scotland and am interested in speaking to people who are both for and against the offshore windfarm. Please email me on peter.ross@scotlandonsunday.com, leave a contact number or email, and I'll get in touch with you. I'm planning to visit the area, hopefully next week, so I'd like to meet up.

Best wishes,

Peter

Peter,

Firstly welcome to the Kintyre Forum. 8)

Surprised no-one has commented on this thread for some time but perhaps this will stir some debate. Here is an image showing the proposed site of the off shore wind farm.

Airtricity, a branch of ScottishSouthern Energy, have lodged an application to develop a wind farm of 126 wind turbines, spread over 27 square miles, four miles west of Machrihanish. The proposed date for construction is 2014.

Now my boy, what have I told you time and time again? You have to keep taking those pills; even though they stick in your throat, you have to keep taking them regardless....... and forgoodness sake, you don't know me, not now, not ever!

I hadn't had time to look at these documents until now. Having now done so, the visual impact is even worse than I first imagined. These proposals are absolutely appalling. Rather conveniently, none of the affected areas is designated as an "area of panoramic quality". That doesn't stop them being areas of outstanding panoramic quality to anyone with half an eye and a modicum of common sense, of course, but it is going to make life more difficult for those who would want to protest the destruction of those panoramas. Absolutely appalling.

Call me old fashioned, but these over-subsidised, under achieving monstrosities, are being forced on areas of outstanding beuaty, like Machrihanish, on the false claim that they will be the answer to all the world's woes. Cobblers!! The companies are on the gravy train and will stay there until the cash runs out, and then will be off like a shot. Thes ecompanies don't care about the environment, they only care about the profit margin. I could guess without seeing any plans that this would be an eyesore :<>

I actually think they add to the overall landscape.Every time I see a plantation of them I always want to stop to admire their beauty. The more the better, especially offshore.

And will we now lose the breathtaking view from the Gauldrons looking across to the Mull of Oa and not to mention the fishing grounds. Up in the hills fine by me but limited, out at sea off Machrihanish is a no go by me.
Income to the community for loss of scenic view, i dont think so. Just my thoughts

Beautiful

Bill,

I think there is a vast difference to the 8 in your picture to the 126 proposed off Machrihanish? :? The proposed site is not only the view from Machrihanish but the view you see down much of the West Coast of Kintyre. Not so sure if the proposals would be beautiful?
