Why not add the 126 to the 341 there? We can even build them and ship them there.

Personally, I don't give two monkeys about your comparison. 8) I'm on about here.

Ooooooops.....N.I.M.B.Y.ism ,surely not.

As stated elsewhere on the forum, for the town to be so reliant on Welcon as the area's largest private employer, with an expansion of 200 jobs forecast, and then to take the NIMBY attitude to local offshore sites beggars belief. :@

assuming that the off-shore wind turbines can be built at Welcon? I've been told that this will not be possible. Does anyone know if this is true?

Also, I have been looking for a link to the Scotland on Sunday article by Peter Ross. Does anyone have it?

Thanks

I don't see anyone saying we shouldn't have them, just not in that exact location.

Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder but I can't see how anyone could reasonably argue that the aesthetic of the west coast of Kintyre would be somehow enhanced by this development? This isn't a few pretty windmills, it's a truly massive industrial object in the middle of an otherwise relatively unspoiled vista.

Windpower is a stopgap at best that future generations would have laughed at if they weren't going to have to clear up the mess.

Since the Scottish Government have ludicrously committed to generating 50% of Scotland's growing electricity needs from renewables by 2020, I sadly can't see this project not happening. I just hope that I live long enough to see the monstrous carbuncle dismantled within my lifetime.

Perhaps SSE could do a feasibility study into developing underground turbines at Killkerran Cemetery? I'm sure the amount of spinning going on in the graves down there in relation to this proposal could, if harnessed, provide more than enough electricity to keep their shareholders in the required fat dividends, plus it would be less controversial, equally ethical and just as likely to successfully contribute towards the long-term power needs of the country.

So what if people are nimby's? Wind power is a scam that is oversubsidised, and so what if Welcon are the biggest employer in the town? When their huge subsidies are stopped do you think they will hang about putting ther own money into the local economy? Will they 'eck as like. We are all being brainwashed into believing that wind power and the like are the way ahead. They are more expensive, and less efficient than other means of electicity productiom. How about looking at more hydro-electric in Scotland? It is about the wettest place in the country and hilly as well so would be suited for daming up and getting the turbines turning. I accept I am biased, but the pro-wind farm folk are equally one-eyed  It will spoil the area for no discernable benefit to the locals. :(

What beggars belief is you can have a swipe at people just because it IS their back yard!

As mentioned elsewhere people aren't saying we shouldn't have ones, just they could be in better locations.

The proposal here is 3km of Machrihanish - that's not offshore - that's inshore. The Essex one quoted is at least 19km off shore - hardly comparable Bill. The turbines here are at least 2 times the hight of Cara Island and and on average half as far away. The only reason this is a viable site is because it high wind, close to shore and shallow....... oh and therefore will maximise the return in shareholders pockets. Nothing to do with the environment but profit.

Let's be realistic about accusations of NIMBYism. I don't think there is a community anywhere that would welcome a development of this nature and scale on its doorstep in the middle of what is locally considered to be a scenic area, unless there was going to be some substantial compensating long-term benefits to the area.

See the SSE kintyre website for a photomontage of the proposed windfarm.

There doesn't appear to be a photomontage from Machrihanish which would obviously be of great interest to local residents, the golf courses and anyone interested in tourism. I will ask if there is such a thing.

Have already done so Mary twice now, the first time about 3 months ago. I would imagine that these will be essential for the public consultation which should take place in due course.

That photomontage is absolutely laughable! Amazing how it has been added with the light blinding the wind turbines! And from miles away.

Lets see one from Machrihanish.
