Who would have thought years later they would be sold as holiday homes!

No change there then. MQ's were only ever temporary accommodation for a bunch of glorified Gypsies. Only thing was, at least Gypsies got to take their homes with them.
Not that I'm still bitter, you understand, perish the thought.
However I do remember 23 Cnoc Moy Gardens as being a lovely wee house, lots of happy memories from then.

There is another memory from there. Those lamp posts. Mum calling me over to the kitchen window and saying, "Look at this".
The posts were swaying in the wind that came straight across that airfield. It was a draughty old place as I remember.

it still is a windswept hell hole.I laughed my socks off when last visiting.I can remember it in the late sixties and how the yanks that were posted there could not believe their new quarters.
I often take a side ways glance at the drome as i drive past on the main road,and chuckle inwardly in amusement when i remember the kids i knew there.

Oh man, it was never a hell hole, not when I was there, it was far from that. It was the best RAF station I ever lived on, the most wonderful place and the memories I have from there are fantastic.
OK, so it was a bit draughty, but so what ?
Most of the Yanks I knew loved it as well.
I have lived on RAF stations that have been hell holes and I can assure you that Machrihanish wasn't one of them.
That was a nice wee bubble we lived in there. Once the school day was over and off we went back there to live in our bubble until the next school day. That's how I remember it.
Most RAF stations I lived on were stuck out in the sticks and back then cars were still not as plentiful as they are today, so a lot of us really were in our little RAF bubble once we were back home. It was only at Machrihanish that we seemed to break out of that bubble for a while.
What a wonderful place it was.

You seem to know a lot about life on the base and the people there. Were you actually a resident there or are you just making assumptions based on your thoughts of what it must have been like.
I personally lived on the camp for nearly 3 years in the 70's and had many friends, attended the Grammar School and had friends there and to be honest the people that I was friends with there were nice people. And I have been back to the Toon for the last 5 years and all my family love it up there.
I will be back again on Monday 11th August, if you would like to meet up and discuss the fact that you think all the RAF kids are deluded then feel free to contact me.

yes i was there! Had a good few friends who lived there too. Even went out with a girl from the drome for a while.
Life and work have taken me far away from the wee toon,but i do return often.So dont think i am not up to speed on local events.
Sorry Pete, but much as i would love to meet up,i have a busy schedule. Enjoy yourself and make the most of a lovely location.
