Have your say....

The burying Place by Brian Freeman is a terrific page turner.
In the quiet town of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, a baby vanishes from her bedroom in an opulent lakeside home, was she abducted, or does her father have a terrible secret to hide? That same night, a young policewoman gets lost in the fog and stumbles into the middle of a horrific crime.

I know I'll cry until my dying day has come
Let the Winter roll along

GG, I found Snapshot to be very good, never read Craig Robertson before, a little reminiscent of Stuart McBride, who I like very much.
I`m still not enjoying Sister very much, hope it picks up soon.
Bill, I liked The Burying Place as well.
I`m reverting to my childhood now, I`ve just ordered Little Women and Good Wives from Amazon, I loved all those books by Louisa May Alcott when I was 11/12, thought I`d see if they`d still please me now. If they do, I`ll get the other 2, Little Men and Jo`s Boys.

"Taken" is the eighteenth in the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series, and just like the previous seventeen it's a cracker.

It's the way I tell them.

I`VE NOT COME ACROSS n awful lot of Robert Crais books Bill, I keep looking for them. I`ve just finished The Last Minute, by Jeff Abbott. A former CIA man has his newborn son stolen by a criminal organisation, and teams up with a woman who`s child has also been stolen, in order to find him, but there are conditions attached.

Completely out of my comfort zone but having a go at "Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. I haven't heard a bad review yet and, at only chapter 6, I am enjoying it so far :D

Just finished Little Women, closely followed by Good Wives, by Louisa May Alcott, I read them both, plus Little Men, when I was 11/12 years old, and loved them, and now I`m loving them all over again. Next to buy is Little Me, plus the last in the series, which I have`t read, cos I didn`t know about it, can`t remember the title though. At the moment, I`ve just started The Blue Nowhere, by Jeffrey Deaver, looks as if it`ll be OK.

Are you there Bill? I`ve just finished a Robert Crais book, from 2001, called Hostage. It was okaaaay, but not as good as the Elvis Pike and Joe Cole stories. Have you read it Bill? I`m now reading Blood and Ashes, by Matt Hilton, okay so far.

NPlease,The Hostage was turned into a film starring Bruce Willis.I agree his Elvis Cole/Joe Pike books are superior to his stand alone,of which there is only three.Though the third one,The Two Minute Rule(2006) , did win a handful of awards.

The Matt Hilton book was quite good, slightly reminiscent of Lee Child`s Jack Reacher books, but obviously not as good. I`ve just finished Red Mist, by Patricia Cornwell, another Kay Scarpetta story. OK, but not as good as the earlier books, I keep reading them in the hope that she`ll come back to the boil again, but disappointed again. Just started Good as Dead, by Mark Billingham, it looks like it`ll be a good `un, it`s another in the Tom Thorne series.

Finally catching up with some reading though the three books I have read recently are all quite dark:
The Wicked Girls by Alex Marwood was great. Two 11 year old girls meet for the first time on a summer day and by the end of that day are accused of murdering another child. Twenty five years later, with new identities, they meet by chance. One of them is now a journalist and is reporting on a serial killer in a seaside town where the other lives. The story jumps between present day and "that" day 25 years ago.
Into The Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes was our latest bookclub read and I must admit to rolling my eyes when I heard it was about OCD. I had to apologise and admit this is one of the best books I have read this year.
This story again jumps between years from Cathy in the present to Catherine in the past. Catherine had a very abusive relationship which left her with her condition. I don't want to give anything away about the plot but I couldn't believe I could feel such terror for a character in a fictional book.
The last one, just finished today is the darkest yet. The Panopticon by Jenni Fagan has been compared to Trainspotting. This certainly won't be everybody's cup of tea as it deals with drug abuse, prostitution, assault and the care system. There are very vivid descriptions of drug highs and self harm. The language is also very bad but fitting with the characters. The main character Anais is 15 and has been a "lifer" in the care system. I really liked her character, she is witty, loyal and intelligent and has just had a bad start in life. A really well written first novel from a Scottish author but very very dark.
Any cheery recommendations for me? :D

Not exactly cheery Ags, but can recommend Down the Darkest Road, by Tami Hoag, No One Left to Tell, by Karen Rose, and The Tin Ring, by Zdenka Fantlova, a true story, of a Czechoslovakian Jewish lady`s experiences at the hands of the Nazis, and her time in Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen.
Good to see you back in the reading thread, wonder where Bill is?

Recently read What's Tha Up To? by Martyn Johnson.

" ‘I've turned boys into men and policemen into coppers,’ said the Sergeant. ‘Policemen have got brains, but coppers, they've got brains and common sense.’

No two days were ever the same for bobby-on-the-beat Martyn Johnson. Come rain or shine, he patrolled his patch with a sharp eye for troublemakers and a kind word for those in need of a friend. And whether he was pursuing unlikely coal thieves, tracking down peacocks gone AWOL or investigating mysterious flying saucers over Sheffield, PC Johnson faced every new challenge with a smile and a healthy dose of his copper’s common sense.

In his charming and funny memoir, Martyn Johnson recalls the rogues, cheats and scoundrels – as well as the many friends – who made his life on the beat so unforgettable.

‘A wonderful slice-of-life autobiography . . . vividly atmospheric’ Daily Express "
