An old ship-mate of mine used to say that farmers liked to use the word toil, but many were a bit shy of actually getting involved in it. As for 'pongal' being used to refer to anything agricultural, I think you have a more than 'fertile' imagination, if the byres around this village are anything to go by.
And yes, there are still men alive that took great pride in their vessels, indeed are still great varnishers to this day. You would only need to stand still for more than two minutes in their company, before they'd apply the first coat and sand you doon for the second.
Shifting the emphasis back to the land, the only 'pongal' tractors I ever witnessed, were ones still in the showroom or lying idle like museum pieces.
However, no doubt their are some fermers who like to keep their drills, furrows & round bales pongal.
A bit more civic pride is what we need!
