Carradale Glen

Thro’ Highlands, thro’ Lowlands
On moorland and ben,
Oh give me the wander
In Carradale Glen.

By Carra’s clear waters,
Mong tall rustling trees,
The birds-song are swelling
The cool morning breeze.

Dewy bluebells are sighing
Farewells from yon den,
O come back to wander
In Carradale Glen.

I leave you with grieving
And sadness of mind,
While memories linger
Of hearts warm and kind.

For ever and ever
Beyond human ken,
My spirit shall wander
In Carradale Glen.

Ah mind fine Mrs Donnie's " Wee Choir " singing C G at a concert in the Hall------- special request by exiles home from abroad. They were all greetin, but havin a great time, wallowing in nostalgia.
Ah hope iverybody will be word perfect on the night up Airds Wid, and we will raise the rafters at the "Burma Rod "

Sarid

Just checked the Wild Sarachs site and note that on the third verse it starts "Bright bluebells are waving" as to the above version i received from Jeanette McKinnon.

You might think that. I couldn't possibly comment. ;)

Actually, I forgot to include a warning to drivers to watch out for all those amorous frogs that are hopping about the place at the moment. :)

Oh, and nice work on the old wheelhouse, Morenish. Looks so much better with a new roof.

I remember the old rhyme: 'The Torrisdale Toad Crossed the Road, just to see the puddocks dancin'

I cannot remember anymore as I am puggled after fixing the wheelhouse. Morenish is a hard taskmaster!

He's expecting me to rebuild the rest of the boat before the Glasgow Fair!

On the subject of boats I debated whether to post this.

Down staying in Irvine last weekend I took my usual wee run down to the harbour museum (visit annually at boat jumbles) to see the boats and to one in particular. The Antares which was donated to the Irvine Maritime Mueseum by the late owners wife was not there. Curious as to were it was, I thought it may be up the slip for a paint job as it was badly needing, i asked a local person.

Well now is the end of an era as that person said the Antares was towed down to Troon about eight weeks ago and broken up. Could have been it was too costly to maintain. I myself think that was the best thing to do, considering how good the boat was kept by the late skipper and to see the state of her as in the pics I took last year.

We better all sing the same wurds.

Thro' highlands thro' lowlands
O'er moorland o'er ben
Oh give me to wander
In fair Carradale Glen

By Carra's clear waters
Mong tall waving trees
The bird songs are swelling
The cool morning breeze

Bright bluebells are ringing
Farewells from yon ben
Oh come back to wander
In fair Carradale Glen

I'm leaving Glen Carra
Sad thoughts in my mind
While memories linger
Of warm hearts and kind

For ever and ever
Beyond human ken
My spirit shall linger
In fair Carradale glen

That wis the vershun sung beautifully in two pairts by Mrs Donnie's wee choirs in the forties and fifties and maybe even the sixties. Who can mind her great concerts in the hall? Wee Roy neerly brought the hall doon wi' his shenannigans wi a hanky when he wis doing an acshon song aboot sailors.

never said you got into trouble it was me that davie gave the row to fir usin local dialect, he gave someone else a row for sweerin, a fishermens site and theres to be nay local twang or cursin, gie soft those easties.

terrible news JD was just talkin bout the boys today as it falls the day before the wife's birthday its never forgotten, its 18yrs the day since my own father went and we were talkin bout anniversaries and stuff, i'll never forget that day, blew up the engine steamin off from the back of the holy isle to join the search, spent the weekend aboard the true token in the search, shame the boat has been broken up, it was a reminder to us all of the price thats sometimes paid at t he job, i was never able to go and see her and i don't think i would have wanted to, i just remember my last chat with jamie the previous evenin as we lay at the bouy in lamlash, all that knew them didn't need the boat to remember, but maybe the visitors to the place did need to hear the story, make them appreciate something that we all take for granted.

The Quay

Postby SARID » Tue Feb 26, 2008 8:15 pm

It's kinna sad tae read aboot the cairry oan doon at the quay. I hav great memories o' happy friendly Summer evenings "doon at the quay"Folk wid come doon tae see the boats "go oot" tae fish for the herring. It wis a social occasion, wi great blethers and plenty O' gossip exchanged--- even the midgies didna seem as nesty and bothersome as they are now!
Quite often the next morning there wid be "a mail o' herring"hinging on the doornob-----much appreciated. Ma Faither considered himsel the expert when it came to frying the herring in oatmeal. ( he was also fond o' a plate o' meal an ingins (advice on spelling needed) When ye added a mail o' Wal's Epicures( or wis it Arran Pilots ) you had ameal fit for a King
I thought I wisna familiar wi the word "Jalouse ", Humphlock, but a relation tells me it was used by my forementioned Faither. I have no memory o' that, but efter looking it up in the Scots Dictionary, and now knowing the meaning o' the word, it will be part o' ma vocabulary

Well, well, SARID, ah'm pleased tae hear that there is a dictionary wi them old words in it. I wisna jeest sure on how tae spell it although.

I've jeest minded that ah niver enlightened yeez as tae the identities o the footballers in thon old phota. Chuckiebay wiz right aboot Dunnis, but no aboot the other fella, ah don't think. I'll put the phota on again now with the names innabelow.

Back row (missing out the two unknown collar-and-tie men at either end): Angus Mitchell (?), Archie McIntosh, Neil Ritchie, Gilbert McIntosh, James Campbell, Jackie McIntosh

Front row: Denis McIntosh, Dan Mitchell, Tommy McKerral, Duncan McIntosh, Robert Paterson

If Tosh is still on here, he'll see his grampa in the back row. I believe the goalie, Tommy McKerral, wiz from Glesga originally and he was a baker.

Gled ah can still be right the odd time. Wasn't Dunis lake a Holywood hairtthrob o the twinties. The Toshes must have been the backbone o'the team. Ye can spot the resemblances to faces still goin roond the village. Are there any of these men's granweans (greatx) in the present team?
