SARID wrote:Well done Cuach! Ad clean forgotten aboot that ither "Carradale " song. Far cheerier than "Carradale Glen"There will be less folk greetin at the end o' our evening up Airds Wid!
Also this song will gie General Jack the correct spelling o'"Moineruadh" so no excuses. That's the place the wifie saw the boat sailing ower the field, when the local boat wis loast on the way home frae Ireland. That's the story according tae Chuckiebay.
The names o' two o' Mathew Macdougall's boats are inscribed above the coonter in the restaurant in the Oyster Bar at the heid o' Loch Fyne. They are, if ah mind right " The Clan Macdougall" and the " Maggie Macdougall" Ah'll need tae check the nixt time am on ma way tae Glesca, tae be sure am right. There's other boats minded as well, an ah wis told when ah asked aboot how they wir there, wis told they wir the boats that regularly fished Loch Fyne long ago

I saw a photo in the West Highland Free Press in recent weeks of the Clan Mathieson at Plockton. I meant to cut it out, but may still have access tp a copy. Apparently the old brothers who had her couldn't face selling her to someone else to ruin and they took her out and opened the seacocks, giving her a soft landing on the sea bed. Local divers have reported that she still had the mugs in the press and the cutlery in the focsle drawer.

I'm not sure if the condensed milk was also in the press along with the hard water biscuits. Maybe she should be raised and taken home to Portrigh!

i take that to mean your tone deaf too sarid? i've never met a man could sing all the right notes in all the wrang places as he did, especially on a sunday mornin when he'd stick on his rangers albums or for a real treat, johnny cash lice from san quenton on a bit of hank williams, but the favourite which wid clear a room in a trice wiz the alexander brothers rendition of nobody's child, when he stertid singin he was the boy that was left standin alone, but he turned with ears that coodna hear a tune raither than eyes that coodna see, altogether now, "i'm nawbhodees chiil, am nawbhodees chiil, geest laik ah flloor, am grouwan wiiiiiilllllddd"

Timmer -tuned an tummer

Postby SARID » Mon Mar 10, 2008 12:09 pm

Ye're right Gen A've checked and the correct is "timmer-- Tuned" We Carradalians spoke aboot someboody being "tummer ". We didna bother wi the "tuned"
You got me wrong aboot the singing. I am na Tummer, in fact the exact opposite. Ah wis wan o' the leading lights o' Mrs Donnie's mixed wee choir
You picked me up wrong wi regard tae yir Faither's singing----- Ah meant he wis the most timmer-tuned iver heard in the Glen

Ah'm puzzled wi' this banter between General Jack and Chuckiebay aboot the number CN 110. Ah have it on good authority that 2 fishing boats canna have the same number. This authority thought the Jasmine wis a BA boat. The Escallonia wis fishing till the 60s when she became a yacht. Maybe yachts don't need a number. Ah do remember the condensed milk though. Delicious it wiz too but no very hygienic - just a hole made in the lid o' the tin. Dono how we survived the germs.

Sorry Sarid ah canna mind the Ride. Did we no come home from the school in a brake? Ah've no much mind o't so it canna have been very excitin.

Ah think Drumbuie means yellow ridge so maybe the hill above J D's Drumbuie corner is Drumbuie too.

a better authority on wit exactly? i went to girvan to look at her, went back to collect her and worked aboard her for 12 yrs, now in what way would you be a better authority? did you know that at the front end on the inside of the hauld hatch, next the flywheel fur the wunch was and probably is still carved the original number BA55, i was told some story about it being carved as a sign the she wasn't paid for, but knowing the person that gave me the information, its probably a load of whooie, him an his bike an his accumulators taking charge due to brake failure are probably nonsense too, but i will ask him.

it was a good few years before the BA55 was struck thru, the CN110 was carvedin a different place. in the forward portside pocket above the porthole which was situatedbetween thecooker and sink in the galley. if memory serves this happened during a DTI survey in the mid 80's. would have been the time the DTI inspector tied us up because kelly hadn't finished making the removable metal shutters for the skylight. a great loss of fishing time asit was the23rd of december and theport was already closed. i recall being told not to say anything in casei said the wrong thing, only for the skipper to arrive and give the man pelters. would have been when the salesmens offices were temporarily on the new quay

The Plockton Historical Society are holding a display of photos gifted to them and I think this Potrigh built boat is included. Maybe there are more pics of her.

That's a fine old photo there Pongal, it almost looks like it was taken in the burn.

Also, now I know where Morenish's last garden shed came from! Thankfully the later wheelhouses from this stable were much better looking. I wonder was the wheelhouse original or was it added up at Plockton?

Talking of Morenish, the varnish is not even dry and he is trying to shanghai Sanyanya back to stoke his living room brazier. He'd better watch that squint chimney pot tonight as the wind is going to go North Westerly, just perfect for turbo-charging his log burner. Hopefully Humphlock will manage back on soon to treat us to some more lore.

Sorry for the silence lately but I'm divilish involved with writing a great big long poem aboot the Torrisdale Toads. I've near a hunder verses by now (or it feels laik it). I've got to the stage that I'm dreamin in rhyming couplets! More anon.
