To be fair is this really a community project?

Music Fesitval....NO
Bingo...............NO
Concerts............NO

This is a worthwhile building to be preserved but to ask the local people for support and deny them the use of it........Well, a bit cheeky at best.

Just my opinion of course!

Unfortunately not everyone wants to watch the latest films in the Cinema but everyone is being encouraged to support it. This community project building could and should be used for other events that could be of benefit to a wider age group.

Not sure what the attendance is but a while back I read that the audiences were poor. Would you not say if that's true it indicates a lack of interest in what is on offer. Historically it should be kept as a cinema but does it need to show films every time the doors are open?

That's not what most people say! To be fair I think this is probably the most asked for thing at the cinema.

Malky I should maybe have worded that differently. I don't doubt that cinema goers want the latest films but the point I was trying to make was that not everyone is a cinema goer no matter what film is showing. I think the staff do a good job of making us aware of what is on and the programme is the best it can be...... but back to my point this building should be made more of and reach alternative audiences that don't want to watch films. I think that is in everyone's interest.

As I said already just my opinion.

Only the top 3 can win £6000 and The Picture House is currently lying 4th. That is a great endorsement from the community, but we still need more votes! So this is another plea to go online, register and vote for us.

Voting ends at midday on Monday 24th October so if you haven't already done so, please go online now to register and vote for us at http://communityforce.rbs.co.uk/project/919. Alternatively, you can now vote by phone by calling the 24-hour Freephone line on 0800 210 0245.

Well the good news is that the Picture House is currently in 3rd place with less than 1 day of voting to go!! Bad news is that another project - Pulse Community Radio from Barrhead - has had a big push on today and are narrowing the gap in votes very quickly. They've come from nowhere and are only 30 votes behind now :(

So this is another plea for more votes! If anyone has still to vote for the Picture House or can get others to vote, it needs to be done tonight or tomorrow morning (voting closes at midday). Instructions are in previous posts above.

Given that Argyll projects have been lumped in with projects from much larger population centres (like Paisley and Barrhead) I think it is a fantastic achievement that the Picture House has done so well in this competition. Many thanks to all who have voted.

I voted early doors so I'd be delighted if this latest news is right!

Having said that, Isa has a point. There's no point just preserving it as a building: it has to be used. Obviously that's first and foremost as a cinema, but simply in terms of the cinematic offering, more needs to be done to build the audience. At present it's taking longer than it used to to get new films here and often only a short while before the film comes out on DVD. Consequently many people have seen them by the time they get to The Picture House. I understand the economics, but it seems that business sponsorship rather than bums on seats is what's keeping it open. While getting sponsorship is important, it tends to mean that there's less need to depend on box office income. Building the audience is a must. And not having the cinema available as a venue for the music festival is a nonsense. The community has a right to scrutinise the reasons for its not being available. The support is there, but more needs to be done to sustain and expand it.
