I was just reading about the proposed offshore windfarm and thought that people may be interested to know that a paper on how ownership affects public perceptions of windfarms is due to be published. I conducted the research in Kintyre and Gigha during Autumn 2006 using a combination of face to face surveys and an online questionnaire. Unfortunately it was a much smaller study than I had originally intended due to some unexpected delays caused by ethics clearance bureaucracy. This paper, which is a joint effort between myself and one of the senior lecturers at St Andrews has been ready for publication since early 2007, but the process of getting it this far has been painfully slow.
It has been available online at http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_o ... 119b163019 since early this year and it is due to be published in print in an academic journal called Land Use Policy in April 2010.
Unsurprisingly, the views of the residents of Gigha were more positive, than in Kintyre, but not by as large a degree as expected. Though the study is of a limited size, it is of significance as it is the first time such a study on windfarm ownership has been conducted in the UK and it also has implications for future windfarm development policy.
Unless you have free access to online journals through an academic institution then you will have to pay to access anything more than the abstract, but if anybody is interested, message me with your email address and I will send you a pdf version.
