Hogmanay in Kintyre

Postby browser » Wed Dec 23, 2009 12:49 pm

I had a short stay at Machrihanish Dunes in September and have booked a few nights there over New Year. Hoping to throw in a game of golf if conditions are OK. Is there much snow lying down your way just now and what is the outlook for New Year?

Cannot forecast for the New Year week at this time browser, but this week is out of the question with snow and severe ground frost and ice continuing into the weekend.
Its pretty bad up this way in Carradale especially on the side roads, the main road was bad this morning with a bit of a clearance in the sunshine, but will freeze over hard again by nightfall. I'll post some pics in the photo section.

Hi Jdcarra and any others interested ,

What are the present conditions over your way and what is the present road travel situation on the A83? Can't get too much localised info from other sources and I trust word of mouth better.

Best Regards

Just thought I would add some info for you browser. There are no restrictions on the A83. No delays on bus service, mail or newspaper deliveries.

Temperature today is cold but dry. No snow. Minor roads have cleared considerably because of recent rain. There are no problems on the Machrihanish or Southend roads. If you are staying at The Dunes you should not experience any problems travelwise.

I keep this site on my desktop as I have always found it reasonably accurate.

Enjoy your stay. 8)

Re: Hogmanay - 'Blue' Moon

Postby dgraves » Wed Dec 30, 2009 2:06 pm

"Blue" Moon on New Year's Eve! A second full moon appears on average every 2 1/2 years, but it only appears on New Year's Eve every 19 years. Hope you have clear skies!! Happy New Years, everyone, and a belated Merry Christmas. Hope your Christmas was wonderful :=)

Best wishes to you and you family too Dorian.

Here is an update from the Council today

Issue Date: 30/12/2009

FURTHER WINTER MAINTENANCE UPDATE

The current five day weather forecast is for a good deal of dry and fine weather but with the possibility of occasional snow
showers.

No significant accumulations of snow are expected.

Low temperatures will persist, with highs of just above freezing throughout the day. Freezing temperatures are expected overnight.

We will continue to treat our road network in accordance with our Winter Maintenance Policy, with the main routes being treated first before dealing with the less strategic routes.

The very cold weather of last week meant that the effectiveness of salt was greatly reduced. This week the weather is better, but road surface temperatures continue to be very low so it is important that drivers take care when travelling.

All the main routes are passable but a number of the minor roads are still difficult. It is essential that drivers take care.

When travelling, please ensure that you give yourself more time to make your journeys, and that you drive at speeds appropriate to the road condition.

Due to the weather conditions and the low traffic volumes on our roads it is not possible to expect all our roads to be free from snow and ice.
